The Ancient Practice of Yoni Steaming

The Ancient Practice of Yoni Steaming

Yoni steaming is a practice that has is deeply rooted in connecting to the feminine and mysterious path of the womb. It is an ancient practice that was used throughout Asia and other cultures without a known origin story. What we do know is this practice has been utilized by women for many years and the Taoist teachings help to guide us as to the importance of this practice.

In Taoist teachings, the yoni is known as the golden lotus. The uterus is considered a curious organ in Chinese medicine, not belonging to one organ or meridian system but connected to several - illustrating the importance of this space within a woman’s body. In acupuncture theory, the primary yin (Ren Mai) and yang (Du Mai) channels are sources from the Sea of Blood channel known as the Chong Mai. All three of these channels begin at the space of the lower jiao or lower Dan t'ian in qigong practices, where the uterus is located. This connection allows us to see the importance of the womb space for creating life. Infertility and irregular cycles within Chinese medicine theory is often rooted in these channels, respectively. Without going too deep in theory, these are the channels, sourced at the womb that need to be flowing properly for life to form. Some other organs and channels play important roles as well, but these channels are the root system behind them.

In traditional Chinese medicine, we select specific herbs that support the qi, blood, and overall balance of the womb. To practice steaming is to connect to the deepest part of self, the core of what makes women so powerful. We can explore our relationship with our bodies, our emotions, and even the imprinting held within the fascia often manifested as physical dysfunction of the womb.

Yoni steaming with carefully selected herbs is a declaration of self-love activated through the vibration of each herb's essence. Each herb allows us to explore the womb and the steam softens the edges many women metaphorically hold in this part of their bodies.

We wanted to create a steam to assist women in this process. We formulated our yoni herbal steam with a proprietary blend of Chinese herbs that can be used for amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, dryness, blood stagnation, or stasis, cold in the uterus, dampness, abnormal leukorrhea, regulation of periods, detoxification of the womb & post miscarriage.

We formulated our steam to be used 3-5 days before bleeding (or predicted bleeding for irregular periods) and 3-5 days after bleeding stops. We suggest this so that the womb is supported and prepared to bleed with the assistance to invigorate the blood, to ease any cramps or passing of clots. We then steam after so any residual blood, cells, or even emotional debris is cleared and the herbs assist in returning the body to balance to begin a new menstruation cycle with as much ease and grace as we allow.
