Vaginitis: Noninfectious factors

Vaginitis: Noninfectious factors

Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina or vulva that can result in an abnormal amount of discharge, or color change in discharge that may be accompanied by a foul odor, itching, painful urination, and pain during sex.

There are typically 3 main causes of vaginitis: infections, other non-infectious factors, and vaginal atrophy. If the cause is due to infection, it is important to get evaluated to detect the type of infection. The most common types of vaginitis are bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and trichomoniasis a sexually transmitted infection. Our previous blog post called Yoni Health dives deeper into the common types of vaginitis.

The focus of this blog is to share some of the noninfectious factors that may cause vaginitis and how to prevent it.

Noninfectious factors that cause vaginitis may include vaginal sprays, perfumed soaps, scented detergents, some types of douches, spermicidal products, foreign objects, forgotten tampons, or other objects. If you can pinpoint what may be irritating your yoni, then it is best to avoid using them. I highly recommend stopping the use of any products that contain fragrance for your Yoni since it may cause irritation and it may cause inflammation of the Yoni. Unfortunately, when a product lists fragrance in its ingredients they are not being transparent about what is in the fragrance. The word fragrance is a generic term that can hide ingredients that may be dangerous to your health. According to an expert panel, fragrance ingredients may contain styrene. Styrene is carcinogenic and therefore may cause cancer, and so far, it has been linked with the risk of leukemia and nasal cancer. Your Yoni is delicate and becomes irritated by synthetic products. The pH is key to a healthy vaginal microbiome. Fragrances can throw off the pH and can lead to increasing the symptoms that you were using in a wash to mitigate the symptoms in the first place. This is the main reason why our Yoni herbal washes do not contain any fragrance or artificial perfume.

Prevention is one of the best forms of medicine. Some ways to prevent vaginitis, keeping the area around your genitals clean and dry, avoiding irritants such as products that contain fragrance, changing tampons more often and using hygiene-certified organic tampons, and wearing loose-fitting underwear to avoid trapping any moisture, if you swim to ensure you quickly change into dry clothing.

KYA Yoni herbal wash formulation includes medicinal Chinese herbs that may help offer relief of inflammation, burning sensation, abnormal discharge, and itching. If you have any more questions, please have a look at the FAQ section of our website.
