A TCM Perspective on Leukorrhea

A TCM Perspective on Leukorrhea

Leukorrhea is a normal secretion of cervical mucus throughout the menstruation cycle that is often in the form of a mild clear fluid sometimes a thin white discharge from the vagina, that is odorless and therefore non-pathogenetic. However, a common sign of abnormal leukorrhea presents as a symptom of abnormal thick white discharge. In Chinese medicine theory this is a result of cold-damp or damp accumulation in the lower jiao (in this case the vagina/reproductive system is affected). If there is a deficient or weak spleen (i.e., poor digestion) then this is spleen qi deficiency. An underlying spleen qi deficiency tends to result in symptoms such as excess thick white discharge, fishy or foul odor, irregular menstrual cycles, amenorrhea, and in some cases infertility. In Chinese medicine theory, the function of the spleen is to transform and transport foods in the digestive tract. If there is dysfunction of the spleen due to poor or weak digestion then it is more difficult to break down foods such as greasy and oily foods, dairy, and inflammatory-causing foods. The poor function of transform and transport can lead to an excess accumulation of phlegm, dampness, or mucus. This tends to store as a container in the lungs or if it is a damper quality tends to store in lower parts of the body such as the vagina or reproductive organ. In the case of abnormal white discharge, the damp has accumulated and is stored in the lower jiao (vagina & female reproductive system).

The first signs of a deficient spleen are indicated when there is bloating, nausea, gas, poor appetite, and loose stools that could be accompanied by undigested foods.

Chinese medicinal herbs such as Cang Zhu, Tu Fu Ling, Bai Dou Kou, and Zhu Ling are found in our Yoni Herbal Wash - White, and they can help transform the damp to resolve the thick white vaginal discharge. Some other herbs found in our Yoni Herbal Wash – White, such as Ai Ye (mugwort) help resolve the cold nature of the pathogen. Included in our formulation our herbs to stop itching and reduce inflammation. In this way, our formulation can help regulate menstruation, promote normal leukorrhea, stop itching, and harmonize the vagina to achieve a healthy pH range between 3.8-4.5.

A combination of using our Yoni Herbal Wash - White, modifying one’s diet to strengthen the spleen (digestion), a Chinese medicine supplement formula for internal use, and getting regular acupuncture treatments, may help support the healing process to bring harmony to the Yoni.
