Huang Bai | Phellodendri Cortex | Phellodendron Bark
Properties: Bitter, Cold
Channels Entered: Kidney, Urinary Bladder
Huang Bai is a deeply bitter and cold herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to clear Damp-Heat, especially from the lower jiao. Derived from the bark of the Phellodendron tree, this herb has long been valued for conditions involving excess heat, inflammation, irritation, and stagnation in the lower body.
Sometimes referred to as yellow fir in English because of its naturally golden-yellow bark, Huang Bai is especially known for its role in gynecological formulas. One of its primary traditional actions is draining Damp-Heat associated with thick yellow vaginal discharge, itching, swelling, and feelings of heat or discomfort.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the lower jiao governs the reproductive and urinary systems, and when Dampness and Heat accumulate together, the body may present with symptoms such as irritation, odor, discharge, or inflammation. Huang Bai works by both drying Dampness and clearing Heat, helping restore balance where excess conditions are present.
The Divine Husbandman’s Classic of the Materia Medica states that Huang Bai “alleviates gynecological red-and-white discharge, and ulceration of the vulva,” reflecting its longstanding place in traditional women’s herbal care. Its ability to direct Qi downward further supports its use in conditions where Heat rises or becomes trapped in the lower body.
Beyond Damp-Heat, Huang Bai is also traditionally used to drain Kidney Fire and clear Xu Heat, or deficiency heat. This type of heat may appear as sensations of internal heat, irritation, night sweating, or inflammatory patterns that arise from depletion rather than excess alone. Its deeply cooling nature makes it an important herb for clearing lingering Fire toxicity and excess Heat throughout the body.
Huang Bai is one of the key herbs found in our Yoni Wash Yellow formula, which was created specifically for yellow-type gynecological conditions in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Within the formula, it helps cool, clear, and support the body when Heat and Dampness are present together.
Modern research has identified several active constituents within Huang Bai, including:
- Limonoids
- Phenolic acids
- Quinic acid
- Lignins
- Flavonoids
- Alkaloids
Studies have explored its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antidepressant, and anti-ulcer effects, offering a modern lens into a plant that has been used traditionally for centuries.
