Xuan Shen (Figwort Root): TCM Herb for Nourishing Dry Skin & Comfort

Xuan Shen | Radix Scrophulariae | Black Figwort Root

Properties: Cold, Salty, Sweet, Bitter
Channels Entered: Kidney, Lung, Stomach

Xuan Shen is a time-honored root in Traditional Chinese Medicine known for its ability to clear heat, cool the blood, softens hardness and dissipates nodules as well as nourishing yin. Its cold, salty, and bitter nature makes it ideal for conditions with internal heat and dryness—such dry skin, and inflamed tissue.

In TCM, Xuan Shen is often used when the body's fluids have been taxed by heat or deficiency. This root works gently yet deeply to restore moisture and reduce irritation, both externally and internally. You’ll find Xuan Shen in our Skin Wash: Nourish for its calming effect on inflamed, depleted skin, and in Meno Wash for its ability to cool heat and moisten dryness during hormonal transitions.

There are several constituents in Xuan Shen that mirror these TCM actions, some of which include:

  • Harpagoside – anti-inflammatory, antioxidant
  • Acteoside – protects skin from UV-induced damage, supports tissue repair
  • Iridoid glycosides (e.g., catalpol derivatives) – modulate immune responses and reduce inflammation
  • Phenolic acids – scavenge free radicals and support wound healing

Modern research supports the traditional use of Xuan Shen through detailed phytochemical analyses and pharmacological studies. Scrophularia ningpoensis contains over 160 bioactive compounds, including iridoid glycosides like harpagoside, harpagide, and catalpol derivatives, as well as phenylpropanoid glycosides such as acteoside. These constituents have demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulating effects. For example, recent studies have shown that acteoside and related compounds reduce oxidative damage and inflammation by decreasing reactive oxygen species and inflammatory cytokines in skin cells and immune tissues. These findings align with Xuan Shen’s traditional role in nourishing yin, preserving moisture, and calming inflammation, especially in conditions involving dry, inflamed, or yin-deficient skin. This is particularly important for the symptom of vaginal dryness experience during menopause. Xuan Shen, along with several other herbs bring moisture back to the vaginal mucosal lining, without the use of harsh chemicals or synthetic hormonal support.
