Huang Qin is a bitter and deeply cooling herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to clear Heat, dry Dampness, drain Fire, and resolve toxicity throughout the body. Derived from the root of Scutellaria, this herb has been used for centuries in formulas addressing inflammatory Heat conditions, infections, Damp-Heat accumulation, and excess Fire patterns.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is often said that “bitterness dries Dampness and coolness clears Heat,” a phrase commonly used to describe Huang Qin’s primary therapeutic nature. Its bitter flavor helps drain and dry excess accumulation, while its cold property cools inflammation and clears pathogenic Heat from multiple organ systems.

The Rectification of the Meaning of Materia Medica describes Huang Qin by stating: “its bitter flavor is directed straight downward, its aroma is light and clearing; thus it penetrates both above and below, reaching all the organs internally, while externally reaching the muscles, flesh and skin.” This traditional description reflects the herb’s broad-reaching ability to clear Heat throughout the body, whether internally or externally manifested.

Huang Qin enters the Lung, Stomach, Gallbladder, and Large Intestine channels, making it especially useful for Damp-Heat patterns affecting digestion, the skin, the respiratory system, and the lower burner. In gynecological and lower jiao conditions, it is traditionally used to clear Damp-Heat associated with painful urinary dripping, irritation, inflammation, swelling, and Heat toxins.

Within Traditional Chinese Medicine, Huang Qin is also paired with herbs such as Pu Gong Ying, another botanical found in our Yoni Wash Yellow formula, for internal or external sores, abscesses, and inflammatory Heat conditions. Together, these herbs help clear toxicity while supporting the body when Heat and Dampness become lodged in the tissues.

Beyond its traditional uses, Huang Qin has also drawn modern attention for its antiviral properties, including research involving herpes simplex and herpes zoster, as well as studies exploring its anti-inflammatory and anticancer potential.

Modern research has identified several active constituents within Huang Qin, including:

  • Baicalin: anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects 
  • Baicalein: studied for antioxidant and anticancer activity 
  • Wogonin: researched for anti-inflammatory and immune supportive effects
  • Oroxylin A: studied for antioxidant and neuroprotective properties
  • Flavonoids: plant compound known for antioxidant support 
  • Phenolic compounds: antimicrobial and antioxidant effects

These compounds have been studied for their antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer effects, continuing to bridge traditional herbal knowledge with modern scientific investigation.
